Counteroffer Acceptance Can Lead to Career Suicide |
A career change is a very difficult decision to make. However, once made, you should follow through with it
and not look back. Employees who accept counteroffers, as great as they may sound, more often than not, place their careers in jeopardy.
Consider the following:
- You should not have to resign to get what you are worth. Ask yourself this, "Would the company have given me a raise or promotion if
I had asked for it the day before I told them I was resigning?" The answer is probably "no", which means their counteroffer is suspect at best.
- Your employer will most likely feel that they have been "blackmailed" into giving you a raise or promotion. Your loyalty and status as a team player
will always be in question. Often a counteroffer is simply a device to allow your employer time to find your replacement.
- Your reasons for making a change will repeat themselves ... even if you accept a counteroffer. Review these reasons and ask yourself "Does the
counteroffer really and truly offset the reasons I decided to leave?" A counteroffer is nothing more than a short-term fix.
- There have been many studies, which followed the careers of employees accepting counteroffers. Most show that the majority of employees will still
leave the company within 6-18 months after accepting the counteroffer. Why delay the inevitable when an opportunity that can enhance your long-term career
growth is waiting for you now.
If the urge to accept a counteroffer hits you, consider the challenges and opportunities you will be giving up that looked so good to you when you
accepted the new position. It is your career, your livelihood. Remember ... one imprudent mistake could be very costly in terms of your long-term
professional growth.
